Frederick John Brooks was a member of C Company in the 1st Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers and was based in the Mendicity Institute during the Easter Rising. Whilst imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol, he was sentenced to death, but this was commuted to three years of penal servitude. He was ultimately interned until his release from Pentonville Prison in June 1917. He subsequently rejoined the Volunteers, acting in both a military and first-aid capacity. Brooks opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and was part of the republican group that seized the Four Courts in 1922.
