Francis Hardiman joined the IRB in 1913 and shortly afterwards became a founding member of the Irish Volunteers in Galway. He was arrested on Easter Tuesday, 1916, along with other prominent Galway city Volunteers, before they could join the rebellion. Held on a number of sea vessels in Galway bay for the duration of the week, they were eventually transferred to Wandsworth Prison via Cobh and Richmond Barracks. Subsequently placed in Frongoch prison camp, Hardiman was released in December 1916.
