Joe Dunne

Biography

Joseph Dunne joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914, becoming a member of B Company in the 2nd Battalion of the Dublin Brigade. A taxi driver, Dunne was sent by Patrick Pearse to Enniscorthy on Easter Monday, 1916, in order to convey a message to local Volunteer leader Seamus Rafter. Dunne subsequently travelled to the Fairyhouse Races before joining the GPO garrison, where he spent the remainder of Easter week alongside his brother Thomas. He was interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916. Dunne rejoined the Volunteers upon his release and was heavily involved in the transportation of arms and ammunition throughout Dublin but was forced to leave the Volunteers in 1918 after accepting a job as a chauffeur.
