John Williams was a section commander with F Company in the 1st Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers. He fought in the Church Street and North King Street areas of Dublin during the Easter Rising. He was court-martialled following the surrender and sentenced to death, but this was commuted to ten years penal servitude and he was interned in Portland and Lewes prisons. Released in June 1917, Williams rejoined the Volunteers and subsequently took part in the War of Independence. He took up positions in Fowler Hall, Barry’s Hotel and Hammond Hotel at the outbreak of the Civil War in Dublin and participated in a number of republican operations in the city throughout the remainder of the conflict.
