Biography

A member of the Turvey Company in the 5th Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, Joseph Patrick Kelly participated in attacks on RIC Barracks in Swords, Donabate and Ashbourne during the Easter Rising. Interned in Knutsford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916, Kelly served as Adjutant and later Commanding Officer of the IRA’s Fingal Brigade, leading ambushes at Ballogh and Hedgestown, amongst other activities. Interned again in March 1921, Kelly escaped from Kilkenny prison in October of the same year and subsequently fought with the National Army during the Civil War.
