Louis McEvatt

Biography

Louis McEvatt fought in the Easter Rising as a member of G Company in the 1st Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers. He was based in the Four Courts area, occupying Clarke’s Dairy on Church Street and Moore’s Coach Builders on North Brunswick Street during the week. He also took part in the burning of Linenhall Barracks and served in a small detachment sent to the North Dublin Union which came under heavy fire from the British forces. Following the surrender, he was interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916. He rejoined the Volunteers upon his release but was mostly involved in political activity in subsequent years. This activity led to his arrest in December 1920 and he spent a year in Kilmainham Gaol and Ballykinlar internment camp.
