M.J. Howley

Biography

A farmer from Peterswell, Co. Galway, Michael Joseph Howley, better known as Joe Howley, participated in the Easter Rising in Galway. He was sent to Stafford Jail on 13th May, 1916, and was interned until June 1917. He rejoined the Volunteer movement and was appointed as Commanding Officer of the No. 1 Galway Brigade during the War of Independence. After travelling to Dublin on IRA business, Howley was shot by British forces outside Broadstone Railway Station on 4th December 1920 and died the following day.
