Born in Limerick to a father of French Huguenot extraction, Marie Perolz was a member of the Gaelic League, the Celtic Literary Society and Inghinidhe na hÉireann, briefly serving as secretary for the latter organisation. She later joined Sinn Féin, Cumann na mBan and the Irish Citizen Army, and helped to procure arms and dispatch messages in preparation for the Easter Rising. She carried a mobilisation order from Patrick Pearse to Cork Easter Monday, 24th April, but failed to locate Tomás MacCurtain, the local Volunteer commandant. She was arrested, imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol and Mountjoy prison, and briefly interned in England. Perolz became actively involved in the Irish Women Workers’ Union upon her release and subsequently joined the Dublin board of public assistance as an inspector. She remained active in labour and feminist causes until her death in 1950.
