Patrick Colgan was a member of the Maynooth Company in the Kildare Brigade of the Irish Volunteers. Along with a small number of his fellow company members, he travelled to the GPO to take part in the Easter Rising and was stationed in the Evening Mail Offices and the Royal Exchange Hotel over the course of the week. He was interned in Frongoch prison camp until December 1916 and renewed his involvement with the Irish Volunteers upon his release. A commanding officer of the 1st Kildare Battalion during the War of Independence, Colgan took part in a number of operations, including an attack on the RIC Barracks in Maynooth and an ambush on British forces in Kill, Co. Kildare, before his arrest in December 1920. He fought with the National Army during the Civil War and served with the Defence Forces until 1946, having risen to the rank of Major.
