A member of C Company in the 3rd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, Patrick Flanagan was based in Boland’s Mill and the Grand Canal Street Dispensary during the Easter Rising. Following his release from internment, he became captain of C Company and was subsequently promoted to commander of the Active Service Unit of the Dublin Brigade during the War of Independence, participating in the events of “Bloody Sunday” on 21st November, 1920, as well as the burning of the Customs House in May 1921. He was later imprisoned whilst fighting for the republicans during the Civil War.
