A cabinet maker by trade, Richard Hickey was present at the inaugural meeting of the Irish Volunteers in November 1913. He joined C Company in the 3rd Battalion of the Dublin Brigade and was originally stationed at Portobello Bridge on Easter Monday, 1916. He relocated to the GPO on Tuesday and was later positioned in Prince’s Street and Henry Street before evacuating to Moore Street where he helped to bore through the walls of houses. Interned in Knutsford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916, Hickey rejoined the Volunteers upon his release but ceased his participation after a member of his family was struck by serious illness. He was nevertheless arrested during the War of Independence and was placed in Ballykinlar internment camp from January to December 1921.
