Seamus Murphy

Biography

A member of the Gaelic League from an early age, Seamus Murphy served as a steward at the inaugural meeting of the Irish Volunteers in November 1913. He joined A Company in the 1st Battalion of the Dublin Brigade and went on to succeed Eamonn Ceannt as Captain of the Company following the latter’s appointment as Battalion Commandant. Murphy was later appointed Battalion Adjutant and was based in Jameson’s Distillery and Roe’s Distilery during the Easter Rising. He was interned in Frongoch prison camp and in 1917 was appointed Commanding Officer of the Galway Brigade, a position which he held until 1919.
