Stephen Joseph Jordan was a member of the IRB and joined the Athenry Company in the Galway Brigade of the Irish Volunteers upon its foundation. After carrying despatches between Athenry and Galway city at the beginning of the Easter Rising, he took part in the occupation of the Athenry agricultural station and engaged in a battle with the RIC whilst collecting potatoes in Moyode. He was captured by the RIC in early June after going on the run and was interned in Knutsford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916. Interned again in 1918 in relation to the “German Plot”, Jordan was appointed adjutant of the 5th (Athenry) Battalion in the IRA’s Galway Brigade during the War of Independence but was arrested in September 1920 and remained in prison until November 1921. He subsequently fought with the republican side in Galway during the Civil War.
