Born in 1899, John Kavanagh joined the Grocer’s Assistant Company in the Dublin Brigade of the Irish Volunteers in 1916. He was stationed in St. Stephen’s Green and the Royal College of Surgeons for the majority of the Easter Rising. Imprisoned in Richmond Barracks following the surrender, he was released on the 6th May, 1916 and became involved with the Irish Volunteers in Arklow. Imprisoned in 1918, he participated in the War of Independence upon his release and fought with the National Army during the Civil War.
