Member of the Enniscorthy Company, Wexford Brigade of the Irish Volunteers, James Cleary was arrested shortly after the Rising was over in Enniscorthy. He served his sentence in Reading and Frongoch before being released in December 1916. He was active in the War of Independence and on the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War.
