Richard Stokes was Quartermaster of the 2nd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers and was based in Jacob’s Biscuit factory during the Easter Rising. Interned until August 1916, he helped to reorganise the Volunteers upon his release and worked for the General Headquarters of the IRA during the War of Independence, obtaining and transporting ammunition throughout the conflict. He did not participate in the Civil War.
