A native of Enniscorthy, Thomas Weafer (also known as Thomas Wafer) owned a shop in Dublin and served as Captain of E Company in the 2nd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers. He mobilised with his men at Fairview on Easter Monday, 1916, and posted a detachment to Ballybough Bridge to meet British troops advancing from Dollymount. He then reported to the GPO and was despatched across Sackville Street to take charge of the block of buildings from lower Abbey Street to Eden Quay. Weafer was shot through a window in the Hibernian Bank on Wednesday, 26th April, and was mortally wounded.
