Second Lieutenant in F Company, 4th Battalion of the Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers. Byrne was active in the Ardee Street area during Easter week 1916. He was imprisoned at Frongoch and released in August 1916. He took part in the War of Independence and in the Civil War on the anti-Treaty side.
