Henry Manning

Biography

A founding member of the Irish Volunteers, Henry Manning fought in the Easter Rising with C Company in the 1st Battalion of the Dublin Brigade. After forming part of the armed guard over Bulmer Hobson during the Easter weekend, he joined the GPO garrison and was later posted to Reis’s Jewellers and the Imperial Hotel. He was wounded in the leg on Thursday whilst evacuating the hotel and, after being interrogated in the Custom House and then treated in Dublin Castle Hospital, he was deported to Knutsford Jail. Manning was subsequently interned in Frongoch prison camp until August 1916 and rejoined the Volunteer movement upon his release, serving in the War of Independence in spite of his injured leg.
