James N. Dolan

Biography

James Nicholas Dolan, a native of Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, joined Sinn Féin shortly after its formation and was an active promoter of the party in its early years. He was arrested following the Easter Rising and interned at Frongoch prison camp. He won a landslide victory over his nationalist opponent in Leitrim North during the general election of 1918. He supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty and was consistently re-elected to the Dáil during the term of the Free State government, holding the positions of general secretary and chief whip of Cumann na nGaedheal, and also serving as leas-cheann comhairle in 1927. He retired from politics in 1937 after losing the Leitrim seat as an independent candidate, having failed to win the Fine Gael nomination for the contest.
