Patrick Donnelly

Biography

A native of Wexford, Patrick Donnelly was employed by Patrick Pearse as a gardener at St. Enda’s College. He joined the local company of the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and was based in the GPO during the Easter Rising. Deported to Stafford Jail after the surrender, he was interned in Frongoch prison camp until December 1916. Donnelly served as quartermaster of E Company in the 4th Dublin Battalion during the War of Independence, taking part in armed patrols and ambushes in Dublin. He fought with the republican side during the Civil War and performed intelligence duties for the IRA.
