Richard Cotter

Biography

A clerk in the civil service, Richard Cotter was a member of G Company in the 2nd Dublin Battalion of the Irish Volunteers and was based in Jacob’s Biscuit factory during the Easter Rising. John MacDonagh, who was also stationed in the factory, recalled an incident with Major John MacBride in which Cotter “entered the headquarters room, where I was sitting with McBride, and announced that thousands of British troops were advancing up the street. McBride cooly replied, “That’s alright!”. Thinking McBride did not realise the importance of his message, Cotter persisted. McBride again said, “That’s alright”, and, turning to me as if continuing our conversation said, “So I played my king and won the game”. Dick Cotter went away, satisfied that there was nothing to be alarmed about.” Following the surrender, Cotter was sent to Knutsford Jail on the 8th May and was later interned in Frongoch prison camp.
