Rory MacDermot

Biography

Also known as Ruaidhrí Mac Diarmada, Rory MacDermot joined the Irish Volunteers in April 1914, becoming a member of C Company in the 1st Dublin Battalion. He reported to the GPO on Easter Monday, 1916, and was subsequently posted to Reis’s jewellers at the corner of Sackville Street and Lower Abbey Street. After the building took fire on Wednesday, he returned to the GPO and evacuated to Price’s Stores on Moore Street on Friday evening. MacDermot was interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916. He rejoined the Volunteers and served in the War of Independence, taking part in a number of attacks and ambushes until his imprisonment in June 1921. Released in January 1922, MacDermot fought with the National Army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of captain.
