Thomas Mangan

Biography

Thomas Mangan was a member of the Maynooth Company in the Kildare Brigade of the Irish Volunteers. On Easter Tuesday, 1916, he arrived in the GPO with fifteen other members of the company and was posted to the Evening Mail Offices in the Parliament Street area. He subsequently fought in a variety of locations throughout the week, including the GPO, the Royal Exchange Hotel, and the premises of Henry and James Clothiers. Interned in Stafford Jail and Frongoch prison camp until December 1916, Mangan rejoined the Maynooth Company upon his release and played an active part in the War of Independence. He fought with the republican side during the Civil War and was twice interned during the conflict, escaping from Dundalk Jail on the former occasion.
